What is Tadalafil used for?
Tadalafil has the following functions and uses:
1. Treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED)
Mechanism for action:
-Tadalafil inhibits the type 5 phosphodiesterase enzyme (PDE-5), which is responsible for degrading nitrogen monoxide (no)-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in penile cavernoous tissue. By inhibiting PDE-5, the concentration of cGMP is increased, resulting in a relaxation of smooth muscles in cavernous tissue, allowing greater blood flow to the penis and facilitating the obtaining and maintenance of an erection.
Effectiveness:
-has been shown to be effective in numerous clinical trials to improve the ability of men with ED to have sufficient erections for sexual activity.
2. Treatment of pulmonary hypertension (HP)
Mechanism of action in HP:
-in pulmonary hypertension, tadalafil works by relaxing the muscles of the pulmonary artery. By increasing the concentration of cGMP in the smooth muscles of the pulmonary artery, pulmonary blood pressure is reduced, improving the cardiac performance and exercise capacity of patients with pulmonary hypertension.
Benefits in HP:
-it may improve symptoms, such as dyspnea (difficulty breathing), and delay the progression of the disease in some cases.
It is a medicine that should be prescribed by a doctor and consideration should be given to possible side effects and contraindications. Some common side effects may include headache, dizziness, indigestion, among others.
